We’ve all been here before, you go online or to a gaming store to buy a game, and you get home to install the game, and when you login to the game it is riddled with microtransactions. Long ago in my era of the late 80s in the 90s……gaming was much different. We could just pop in our favorite game and go hours at the time having fun without being swamped without the microtransactions.
There is nothing wrong in having some form of premium currency in games, but more often than little, game developers are pressing too hard on the crutch of including these things and not focusing on the well being of the actual game itself. There have been many games that have been released and microtransactions were their main sale. You can take Call of Duty for example. The earlier releases of Cod that came out was just a good experience you could play and have fun. Now in present times, just about all of the Call of Duty games that are being released, are basically pay to win. Spend this amount of money for this skin, or get this bundle for this amount of money to show off the aesthetic of a particular character.
You need to at least make sure the main sandbox is up to par before you start spamming microtransactions all over the place. I believe a perfect model of fixing a situation like this is probably Destiny or Warframe. I would probably pick Warframe more as you are basically able to get pretty much anything you want in the game. The catch? You either farm for resources to make what you want, or you can pay to get what you want. A very simple algorithm for a very simple problem.
As much of a Destiny fan that I am, Destiny has one or two things they could work on with their microtransactions. I like that they offer you a chance to get certain things with bright dust, but they also have some things you just cant get unless you spend money. Im not against purchasing shaders for bright dust, but a shader should either be locked behind certain triumphs or completing seasonal challenges, simple as that. Besides, I would rather use that on a weapon ornament or a ship etc…. More times than often, Ive seen this game give and take away. Expansions anyone? The glows from Guardian Games. Oh yeah, how about weapons that were sunset and brought back.
There are many trends that videogame developers have been doing to get our consumer dollars for themselves, but I feel microtransactions are one of the worst to show it face. Whether we want them or not Im pretty sure that they are here to stay a little longer. Just be smart about spending your money as a gamer. Until next time! Be Chill. Game Hard!
